What is Mindset? Can you change it or is it set in stone?
What is Mindset? How does it affect us and can we change it? Is it important and does it even matter?
Our mindset is a set of attitudes and ideas that shape the way we think about ourselves and those around us. It determines the way we behave, our whole outlook on life and our attitude towards others. If we wake up every morning expecting the very best in life, our mindset is considered positive. However if we wake up and despair of everything that may or may not go wrong, our mindset tends to be negative.
It is determined by how we are brought up, our culture, our knowledge, the beliefs of our parents and those who influence our early years, and is affected by our experiences through life and what happens to us.
We may believe that we aren’t good at maths or athletics so we never try to excel in these areas. We may believe that we will never have a decent job because we were brought up to believe that. We may have been told that ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’ or that ‘rich people are evil’, so we develop a negative mindset around work and money. We may have been told that we can’t sing or dance because we were never encouraged to as children, so our mindset determines that we can’t sing and we have two left feet!
On the other hand we may have been brought up believing that we can aspire to be or do whatever we want in life. We may believe that ‘the world is our oyster’ and opportunities are out there for the taking. We may believe that great health is possible so we do whatever we can to achieve this.
Our mindset may be determined at an early age but the good news is that it is not set in stone. Despite what beliefs we may hold, we can change these if we really want to. As we grow older, our beliefs may change from those we were brought up with. We become influenced by those we meet, the circumstances of our lives and the places we travel to. Our mindset may open up to the possibilities in life and allows us to change.
If we have always been negative in our outlook, we can change our beliefs and adopt more positive ones. It isn’t easy as our negative mindset may have been with us for a long time, but over time if we really work on it, we can change. One way is to start to develop a positive self worth and self belief by the use of affirmations. Firstly look at your beliefs. Are they self-limiting, for example, I will never be successful.
Have a look at this belief and see what lies behind it. Why will you never be successful? Were you told this as a child, did you ever try something once and you failed? Take positive steps to change this.
Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat regularly until your subconscious mind accepts them. It can take up to three weeks for your mind to accept an affirmation so it’s important to say them regularly. Examples are, ” I am successful in everything I do, Success comes to me with ease and grace, I am deserving of the very best in life, My life is abundant and successful”.
Another way to change your mindset is by having a vision of where you want to be in life and what you want to have. You can write this down in the form of goals that you want to achieve or you can create a vision board where you cut out or paste images of where you want to be in your life. An example is a board or A4 sheet with images of you, a great job, a new house, travel etc. I do one of these at the start of every year and work towards the things I want to achieve in the coming year.
Combine this board with your affirmations and take actionable steps to bring them to fruition. Keep in mind the things you love to do, that make your heart sing. Put feeling into your choices and affirmations. What brings passion and purpose to your life?
Another tool you can add to this is EFT.
Emotional Freedom Technique or Tapping uses a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology to heal issues such as pain, fear, migraines, phobias or anger. It works by using your fingers to tap on specific points on the body located along energy meridians. Sometimes we also need to forgive ourselves or those in our past who have influenced our mindset. Forgiveness is not easy but it’s so important if we are to grow and move on. At the end of each day give Gratitude for the positive things in your life. Yes you may have had a terrible day, but there are always positives to be found. You may have spent time with a friend, had your shopping carried to your car, had a lovely lunch, had someone thank you for something, arrived home to a warm house. These are little things but they can influence how you look at life.
Adopting a positive mindset is important if we want a happy and productive life. We may have a belief that our ‘glass is half-empty” but we can change this. It takes time and it takes effort but is really worth it. I have done a lot of work around self worth and self belief and my attitude towards abundance in my life. I have used the mentioned methods with great success not only in my business but in regards to my health.
Dr.Ian Gawler found when working with cancer patients, that those who had a positive mindset had a much better prognosis than those who decided there was no hope. I have also worked with a reflexologist who had a client come to see her with terminal cancer. The doctors had given him 6 weeks to live. However this man refused to give up, had extensive intense reflexology and a year later was living healthily.
Our Mindset is incredibly powerful!
Every morning decide that today is going to be amazing. Give gratitude for your night’s sleep, your warm bed and healthy breakfast. Start each day on a positive note and begin to change the way you see the world.
What’s stopping you! Start today!!

PS. I also want to tell you about an amazing course that is opening in November. I don’t usually recommend things unless I have experienced them or found them to be really useful and this course happens to tick all the boxes. It’s about changing your Mindset around money. It looks at your beliefs and sabotages and your resistance to earning more.
Yes we do have resistance and blocks that are holding us back even though we may not know it! A friend and fellow business woman, Denise Duffield Thomas has an exceptional course called the “Lucky Bitch Bootcamp”. Don’t be put off by the name as it’s a fun course run over 6 weeks with a community of like minded women who now number over 3000. It is an investment but it totally changed my attitudes towards abundance not just in my business but in my whole life. Yes I am an affiliate but only because it has made such a difference in my life. Have a look at it here:
